Some info:

While Executive Officer of VF14 Wallace shot down a Zeke on 20 June 1944. On the 29th of that month he was detached from the squadron and ordered to report as Commanding Officer of VF31, aboard Cabot.

Still with VF31, he was lost in a night flying accident on 5 March 1945, when he crashed into Monterey Bay in F6F-3 BuNo 42702. The likely cause was vertigo.
