John 'Jo' Lancaster DFC FRAeS

Passed away on August 10th aged 100. Was the first man to use a British Martin-Baker ejector seat when on May 30th 1949 the Armstrong Whitworth AW-52 'Flying Wing' prototype he was flying started to oscillate violently and crashed near Leamington Hastings in Warwickshire.

During WWII he joined No. 40 Squadron at RAF Alconbury, completing 31 operations. He was then posted to 22 OTU for instructing duties.

On the night of 30–31 May 1942, he flew a 22OTU Wellington on the first 1000bomber raid to Cologne. He was then was posted for a second tour with 12 Squadron at RAF Wickenby as they were converting to Lancasters. In 1943 he completed his second tour bringing his total to 54 operations.
