Snautzer, to my knowledge dummy airfields were located elsewhere in the area but why not such wooden model of plane right on the field. For my part I thought to a He 111 E, perhaps confused - in the heat of combat - with a Wellington as the flying-school was using old bombers for training.
Philippe, bring together all these historians... the task will not be easy but your idea needs to be deepened.
