Very puzzling details.
First of all 41-18271 was a B-26B (the B-26D is to me a very obscure aircraft. I have no serial number for and all I can say without checking further is that it was a converted B-26 - no suffix)

Secondly, 41-18271 is not listed in my table of B-26 transferred (or on loan) to either FFAF or FNAAF.

I have no transfer of any B-26 models as early as Aug 1943. The first, 41-18026 was handed over in September that year.

Finally, MAW Vol 4 does not mention any loss of a USAAF B-26 41-18271 on 8 Sep 1943.

Hopefully someone else have better details for you
