Just dashing off an article or quick blog post rarely advances historical research. I think a "just the facts" approach is far more useful. That's what we want, isn't it?

Well said, but I think if we applied your rather rigid standards, the appearance of new books would be reduced at least by 50%. After authoring 4 books, I concluded that it had been a gigantic pain in the backside trying to keep the publisher, the editor, the layout and graphics people, et al, happy. Especially when it was the research alone that I enjoyed.
