Carter's aircraft was shot down by Oberleutentant Helmut Eberspächer; should you be interested I have a copy of his account of the action as it appeared in a 1995 edition of
Luftwaffen-Revue. Eberspächer actually accounted for three bombers, all of which were silhouetted against thin overcast by strong moonlight.
