This occurred when 12 P-38s of the 48th Squadron, themselves on a TacR mission, encountered ten Bf 109s, one of which 1/Lt Virgil Smith claimed shot down; two more were claimed as probables and another as damaged. However, one US fighter flown by 2/Lt Cole failed to return. Fw Anton Hafner of 4./JG 51 claiming a P-38 south-east of Tunis at 1447.
