I-153 in flight (notice no visible undercarriage), wing shape and the fact there is no evidence it ever made it to Spain I've seen.
Curtiss BF2C Goshawk (the Hawk III was the export version of this)
Notice position of undercarriage in this shot which mirrors the image in the OP. The cowling, curve of the aircraft's belly, wing style and length of fuselage behind the cockpit are also good clues.
As pointed out, the style of the picture is very similar to stills I've seen taken from Japanese war movies of the time.
