Re: Ofhr. Werner Stempel + 02.03.45

According to the book "An ordinary day in 1945" by Peter Kassak, Obfhr Werner Stempel of 1./JG 2 was killed when his Fw 190 D-9 was shot down in Mainz area.

At around 1720 hrs this day 30 B-26 of 394th BG having just bombed an ordnance depot near Giesen were attacked a a dozen of German fighters (I./JG 2) and one B-26 was shot down, but "P-47s" joined the battle and six (or seven) German pilots were shot down. The strange part if that the only known claim by Allied fighters in this time period and area was scored by a P-51 of 354th FG, a little earlier (at 1650 hrs).

Stempel's Fw 190 crashed into the bank of the river Lahn. recovered from the wreckage, the pilot was buried at Stockhausen cemetery, some 13 km west of Wetzlar.
