An extract from the book
The German Invasion of Norway: April 1940 by Geirr H. Haarr. "Flying low over the city, Major Gerhard Schäper's aircraft took hits in the port engine, probably from fire from
Odin. The pilot, Oberleutnant Hippel, struggled to keep the machine airborne, but the engine seized and he had to land at sea, some thirty kilometres offshore."
The
Odin was a Norwegian destroyer, soon to be captured in the harbour by the Germans, along with its sistership. This was one of the shockign examples of Norwegian military unpreparedness during the invasion:
