Re: Information Sought on Loss of Gefr. Hans Novak - 22.02.1943 in Africa

Hello,

The info on the Lw. feld.Regt. Barenthin is rather scarce. It was a quickly formed Luftwaffe ground unit to help in the fighting on Tunesian Soil. Amongst the soldiers from this unit the so called "Erg.Gr. (S) 2" was drafted and sent towards Tunesia. That former glider training school formed 2 Batallions, a third was composed from elements of pure FJ.

The fighting lasted from november 1942 untill mai 1943 and then the Axis powers where defeated. A lot of the drafted soldiers from the former glider school (as your person) where in the meanwhil either:

* KIA
* WIA
* MIA
* Captured

Not many soldiers did effectively return (exac numbers are not known), i do estimate that from the approx. 750 soldiers who did belong towards the Egr. Gr. (S) 2 starting november 1942 only approx. 150 towards 200 made it back towards Germany (either wounded or due to some other lucky coincidence). This is a very unknown unit and i am working on a book about it.

Therefore this KIA card did offcoarse attract my interest .

Cordial greetings
