352nd FG question

Gents, I have a little follow-up question. I recently found this artist’s impression of P-51B "Carol" probably flown by it’s regular pilot 1Lt Ray Mitchell of the 328th Fighter Squadron/ 352nd Fighter Groupdowning a unusually camouflaged Bf109. I say unusual, in that the mottled pattern is what I have seen on “beute” Dewoitines and Morane Saulniers, not on Messerschmitts.

The painting comes from a merchandising website “zazzle”…add stuff onto t-shirts, coffee-mugs, etc. Is the painting based on an actual claim for a Bf109….unfortunately I have no Ray Mitchell listed in Frank Olynyk’s Stars & Bars, but not surprisingly as other internet sources indicate he only had one victory claim…does anyone have any details?

Is anyone familiar with this style of camouflage (ignoring the actual colours) on a Bf109?

Or is it possible that the incident involves a mistakenly claimed Dewoitine 520 or MS406?

Regards,
...geoff
