Re: Air Commodore Cresswell-Turner

Brilliant Clint, that's him! And you brought me on the right track to find this:

His Group of four medals - seen on the photo from 1934/35 was sold a couple of years back, with some further info...

"Great War Air Force Cross (AFC) Group of Four Medals. Awarded to Air Commodore Cresswell Turner AFC. Comprising: Air Force Cross 'CAPT CRESSWELL TURNER R.A.F. BUCKINGHAM PALACE AUG. 2ND 1919' (Privatley engraved), 1914/15 Star, '2. LIEUT C. TURNER WORC R', British War Medal, Victory Medal, 'CAPT RFC'. The group remains mounted as originally worn. ... Accompanied by a pair of WW2 period Canadian made RAF flat pilots wings.Air Commodore Cresswell Turner AFC was born in 1896 and after attending Sandhurst was commissioned into the 1st Bn Worcestershire Regiment in August 1915. Transferring to the Royal Flying Corps he flew as an Observer before undergoing Pilot Training he is then noted as been posted to 32 Squadron at that time flying the DH5 on ground attack missions, the Squadron would later convert to the SE5 fighter. At some time in 1918 he posted to the Instrument Design Establishment which was based at Biggin Hill, it is believed that his work here resulted in the award of the Air Force Cross, which was announced in the London Gazette on the 11th February 1919. In August 1919 he was granted a permanent commission in the RAF and in 1920 was posted as a pilot to 210 Squadron. In 1923 he was serving in Iraq as a Technical Officer. The 1930’s would see him moving to the Engineering Branch of the RAF and in 1938 with the rank of Group Captain he was serving as Senior Engineering Officer HQ Maintenance Command. He was promoted to Acting Air Commodore on the 1st December 1941 and in 1942 was SASO HQ Technical Training Command. He retired with this rank in May 1944. He died on the 19th October 1951."
