US Navy Incident March 26, 1927

News Report

"AIRPLANE FALLS AUGUSTA, Ga., March 29 (1927) .---One of a fleet of five airplanes from. Norfolk, Va., to Pensacola, Fla., fell 3,000 feet to the ground as the plane was passing ten miles south. of here late Saturday and Charles Thomas Stone, of the navy aviation corps was instantly killed. Lieut. E. B. Wilkins (Earl Brander Wilkins) and mechanic G. F. Lawhon (George Frank Lawhon).
who were in the same plane, grabbed their parachutes and made successful lands when the engine first gave trouble.

Lawhon was later killed on USS Enterprise on 16th Jan 1942 when a Dauntless crewed by Ensign Daniel Seid and Gunner David 'Dave' Craig crashed into the barrier upon landing his Dauntless 6-S-2

".An unfortunate accident occurred during this morning due to a failure of the arresting system. A plane in landing rolled into the port gallery walkway. The pilot and passenger were not injured. LAWHON, George F., ACMM, USN, received serious head injuries to which he succumbed at about 1900 this evening, when the plane crashed into his station. "

Wilkins became a Lt Cmd in US Navy and died in 1977

Can anyone please identify the aircraft involved in the 1927 incident which occurred at Belvedere, South Carolina
