Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce

Hello,

Currently on ebay is a photo of what appears to be a Mitsubishi Ki-57 in surrender markings

The same seller has a further photo with a series of wrecked Japanese aircraft with a Nakajima Ki-84 od 52 Sentai in the foreground

Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce

Hello,

Currently on ebay are seven photos of Japanese aircraft taken after the end of the war by a member of the 479th Service Squadron. Can anyone assist in identifying this unit? I don't believe I've previously seen the tail emblem

All the photos can be found here

Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce

Hello,

Following my post earlier today looking for information on the unit of the aircraft shown here

https://www.ebay.com/itm/15661455335...0SJ8XC33D2CNXC

Has anyone a link showing locations of the 479th Service Squadron with a view to identifying the location of the aircraft shown?

Also, once again, for anyone interested, the seller has further photos of JAAF aircraft including the To-Go version of the Mitsubishi Ki-67 at

Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce

Clint. The 479th Air Service Sqn. was assigned to 8th. Air Service Group and supported the 90BG; the 8th. ASG was based at Clark Field on Luzon the big former Jap airfield complex. The 90th.BG Sqns. (319/320/321/400BS) were stationed on Mindoro PI from Jan. 1945 then Ie Shima in August so 479th. components would be there too.

Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce

Hello Nick,

Thanks for the reply. Given that the Ki-67 To-Go, as seen in the other link, were based at Clark Field and at Margot with the Fugaku Tai, it seems quite possible, in conjunction with the location given by you for the 479th, that the fighter is from the same location. However, checking the obvious sources, Emblems of the Rising Sun and the Avions magazine 231 with an article dedicated to Japanese fighters in the Philippines, I'm still puzzled by the tail marking.I'm starting to wonder if it too is from a Special attacker unit.Still could be that the photos are from different locations.

Regards,

Clint

Clint. The Nate has a typical stylised Sentai or Shimbu-Tai number (37) this is listed on the 2nd link here, but it says Ki.36 not Ki.27 though they may well have had some; apparently these were numbered in the Philippines. Note the paragraph next to the Oscar in the Ameblo site.

Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce

Hello Nick,

Thanks for the links and information. Cerainly it is not implausible that the machine is No.37 Shinbu Tai, given that Tachiarai Army Flying School also operated the Ki-27. Where I'm hoping for a little clarification from you, is in your statement that the marking is a stylised 37.Happy to accept this is the case, given you've said so,but the character to my mind at least doesn't resemble any of 第三十七. Should I be looking elsewhere or is it that you've seen this marking previously on an aircraft of that unit?

Regards,

Clint

Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce

Clint. Not seen another with this marking but it looks to me like a temporary one given the usual Japanese neat and distinctive methods tail markings. It's possibly not a "7" since the rudder is damaged so I'm not positive.

The location could be Clark Field given the variety of types. It's importance can be seen in this map from earlier in 1945 before it's capture.
Regards
Nick
