Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Hi Clint. These are the 2 photos I saw of Ki.54s ( this page and next) with that insignia apparently in a Communications unit; also referenced as such in Barry Kettley's "Emblems of the Rising Sun" as allocated to Utsonomia (and with a red band ). As you say maybe different sections but just guessing.

Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Hi Nick,
Thanks for the link. I shall search for further aircraft from Utsonomiya. A follow up question. Do you know what the symbol shown is called in either English or Japanse ? Just thinking it might help when searching. I am also inclinded to think that given the seller is Chinese, possibly the aircraft is from a China based unit. Another track to follow in any event. Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Hi Clint. I think our Japanese friends will be of more use but I'm sure the emblem is a school insignia not a character; it has a flag or pennant for Communications and 2 triangles for incoming-outgoing. Mito and Utsonomia are only about 30 miles apart and both were targets of fire-raids by B-29s on Aug. 2 and 12 July respectively. Both are on Honshu NE of Tokyo.
You might find this link useful in the future, you can draw the character and then identify it. A steady hand is needed which I havn't got. Incidentally the 105th. Training School had a similar emblem but turned 90 degrees. Nick https://www.japandict.com/kanjidraw |

Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Thanks Nick,
I hope the Kanji dictionary proves useful in the future. However, I don't think I expressed my question very well. So this is what I'm looking for. An object with four equal sides is called a square,an object with three sides is called a triangle. What I'd like to know is what the object on the aircraft tail is called. That is all.If it has a name. Regards, Clint |

Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Sorry Clint, over-complicating as usual. If you mean the 2 triangles, in geometry it's a "complex" or "self-intersecting" quadrilateral (minus the vertical line) colloqually a bow-tie or butterfly.
The 484BG had a red bow-tie as Group ID on their B-24s. Nick |

Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
In 1926 they were to replace Salmson 2A2s as Kawasaki Type 88-I recconaisance and Type 88-II as light bombers; Kawasaki was originally a shipbuilding company and they were known as KDAs ( Kawasaki Dockyard, Army). In 1929 there were 11 Recon. squadrons with 9 x 88s each, the 2 light bomber squadrons having 9 x Mitsubishi 2MB.I Type 87s each.
