RAF B-24s
My late father served in the RAF in Burma, (I believe he flew from Rangoon), as a gunner in a B24 Liberator. Does anyone know what the RAF Squadron numbers were in Burma, and where is it possible to try and get more info on his RAF career ?

Hi Sballance According to " The FORGOTTEN AIR FORCE" in March 1945 ,at least 10 RAF Squadrons were equipped with Liberators in India/Burma , 5 of which ( Nos 99,215,159,355,356 ) bomber squadrons. Hope this helps gianpaolo |

Re: RAF B-24s
Rangoon was Japanese-occupied until just before VJ Day (I forget the precise date, but it should be easily obtainable). Perhaps the unit moved there very late on?
For service details try the RAF Commands website, which rather specialises in helping with such queries. |

You'll find this site informative: http://www.acseac.co.uk/ As to his RAF career, have you applied for his service records. If not, details of how to do so can be found here (just one note - if you do decide to apply for his records make sure to ask for photocopies of the originals because otherwise they tend to send you a one page typed summary - people have found this next to useless for any meaningful information): http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_...e_records.html I also have a copy of "BURMA LIBERATORS" by John R.W. Gwynne-Timothy. Though the two volumes are mainly about the RCAF in Burma, it contains a lot of info on all the Liberator squadrons. If you should happen to find out which squadron your father served in, then I'll look up the info. |
