![]() That was one of the air groups that attacked Poland, with the one of the first raids against the bridges over Vistula in Tczew (Dirschau in German). It was commanded by Oberst Wolfgang von Chamier-Glisczinski. It was involved in series of raids over The Narew River ( towns of Rozan, Wizna, etc) and later at Warsaw.
I am looking for all possible data connected with this unit ( where, who, how many, etc). Hope you can help Zdrowko |

Re: 1939 Kampfgeschwader 3 "Blitz" against Poland
Here is brief description of the activitiers of KG 3 during the period of the Polish campaign:
Stab/KG 3 01.09.39: reported having 9(7) Do 17 Z at Elbing/East Prussia under Lw.Kdo. Ost Preussen. 01 to 21.09.39: supported invasion of Poland. I./KG 3 19.09.39: Gruppe formed at Burg near Magdeburg from contributions from II. and III./K.G. 3 and new personnel. 1939/40: spent winter working up with Do 17 Z 01.03.40: became operational probably at Burg II./KG3 01.09.39: reported having 38(36) Do 17 Z at Heiligenbeil /East Prussia under Lw.Kdo. Ostpreussen. 09.39: initial operations were against enemy airfields and transportation, then supported advance of the army in the areas of Tczew (Dirschau), Graudenz (Grudziądz), Bzura pocket, Narew, Praga, Warsaw, and Modlin; other targets probably included Plock, Lida and Biała Podlaska; late 09.39: ordered to the west. III./KG 3 01.09.39 reported having 39(30) Do 17 Z at Heiligenbeil /East Prussia under Lw.Kdo. Ostpreussen / Lfl. 1. 09.39: initially struck airfields and lines of communication, then supported army’s advance near Tczew, Grudziądz, Bzura pocket, Narew, Praga, Warsaw, Modlin, Plock, Lida, Biała Podlaska. c 21.09.39: ceased missions in Poland. Unfortunately, KG 3 is the least known of the major bomber units and the above is all that is know about its time in the Polish campaign. |

Re: 1939 Kampfgeschwader 3 "Blitz" against Poland
Thanks,
Most of it was known to me. But I am rather searching for any detailed info, as names of airfields, pilots, etc. Zdrowko |

If so, perhaps you can share with us the details that were not included in the above post. This way, a more complete picture would emerge.

Re: 1939 Kampfgeschwader 3 "Blitz" against Poland
It was a good advise to search myself.
In the MILITARIA ( no 1(10)2009) there was an article by Mr Miroslaw Wawrzynski " Obrona przeciwlotnicza Modlina we wrześniu 1939 roku" ( Air defence of Modlin in September 1939). It says:...on 5 September in the afternoon again over the fortress (Modlin) arrived Dorniers Do 17Z from Staffel 6 KG3. One of the attacking airplanes managed to hit with a little bomb (called a mouse) hit an ammo box of the Bofors 40mm antiaircraft gun. Detonating shels wounded 5 soldiers - 3 among them died. And the second notice: On 10 September the Germans arrived over the Vistula River bridge (airride from 9.32-11.35 am). There were Dorniers Do17Z from 4/KG3. Strong defence prevented them from successful attack. So some questions for specialists: 1. What kind of little bombs (mice) could Luftwaffe use? 2. How many staffels had KG3 and how many aircrafts they had? ![]() The taken in Elbing ( Elblag) shows Do17 probably from KG3 zdrowko |
