Loss of S2+BA (St.G.77), 27.01.1943

Hi,

Does anybody have detailed information about the loss of Ju-87 D1 "S2+BA" from St.G.77, which was shot down by AA fire at Svoboda, near Rostov, on 27 January 1943? Human losses listed as 1 MIA. I know the MIA was the radioman, Uffz. Walter Maisch, but what happened to the pilot? And who was he? My presumption is that he was an Uffz. Jonas (who often flew with Maisch), but I am not certain.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

All the best,
Jason Mark

Hi Mark,
the pilot was Uffz. Joachim Jonas, 2./StG 77 (FSA near Svoboda).

Julius

Hi Julius,
Many thanks for the reply. I presume FSA means Fallschirmabsprung? If so, he must have been rescued by German forces because I found the following on Volksbund:

Quote:
Nachname: Jonas
Vorname: Joachim
Dienstgrad:
Geburtsdatum: 06.08.1918
Geburtsort: Berlin
Todes-/Vermisstendatum: 18.03.1943
Todes-/Vermisstenort: 500 m westl. Flugpl. Poltawa
Do you know if Maisch also bailed out (and later declared MIA) or was he trapped in the plane when it crashed?

One more thing: can I ask about the source of your information.

Thanks again!
Jason

What is the reference for Jonas being the pilot? No name is mentioned in the Gen.Qu. loss report.

Hi Jason,
FSA means Fallschirmabsprung. Uffz. Jonas came back to his unit. Later (18.03.1943) he died in a crash near Poltawa. Maisch could be parachuting on 27.01.1943 and came down near the crashed Stuka. Since this time he is missing. Why are you interested in Uffz. Jonas/Uffz. Maisch?
Regards
Julius

P.S: Sorry for my poor English.

My only interest is that no name is given for the pilot in the Gen.Qu. loss for this machine. Only the missing Bf is reported. (Unless I'm completely blind since I've gone through these things innumerable times - however if there was an update, I may have missed it.)
