BofB Ju88 Colour shot

Hi all,

I stumbled across this interesting colour image of a Ju88 which possibly force landed during the Battle of Britain.

Does anyone know where this occurred or the origin of the image/movie?

Re: BofB Ju88 Colour shot

Hello,
I don't think that this is the West Tisted Ju88, as that was L1+SC. This one, with the White "B", looks a lot more likely to be the 4./KG54 B3+BM of Obfw Heinz Apollony down on 21.8.40 at Marsh Farm Earnley near Chichester Sussex. I believe that this is a frame from a color movie film, which I'd also like more information about. Who took it and where did it come from? Is there more of it out there?

Regards,

Re: BofB Ju88 Colour shot

Larry,

I don't think this is B3+BM for the following reasons:
- There is no sign of a red fuselage band on the colour picture as there is on black & white pictures of B3+BM.
- The WNr (6086) painted in large white numbers is not visible on the top of the tail fin. It is in black & white pictures of B3+BM.
- The rudder of the Ju88 seems to be in a different colour. This is not the fact with black & white pictures of B3+BM.

Regards,
Rudi.

Re: BofB Ju88 Colour shot

This is a still from considerable colour footage of the following crash:

15 August 1940: 4./LG1 Junkers Ju88A-1. Shot down by F/O M.D. Doulton and F/O W.P. Clyde of No.601 Squadron during sortie to attack Worthy Down and belly-landed at Hazeley Down Farm, east of Twyford, 6.00 p.m. FF Uffz Erwin Poggensee, BO Uffz Erwin Kusche, BF Uffz Horst Burkhardt, and BS Uffz Rudolf Müller all captured unhurt. Aircraft L1+BM 100% write-off.

The film was discovered in private hands some years ago by Ian Hutton and received local TV coverage at the time.

Re: BofB Ju88 Colour shot

Ah yes...thats the one!

The Ian Hutton connection made me think of West Tisted since he had some interest in the two crashes there. But at least the failing grey matter had made a sub-conscious connection to 15 August 1940! The simple expedient of me checking that code letter would have given me the answer!

I am now doubting my memory as to which the canopy came from, although it is no longer in my collection but at the Shoreham Aviation Museum. Certainly one of the 15 August incidents, though.

Larry - I do have a connection directly to the owner of the film if you want me to pursue it.

PS - Presumably this swastika panel came from either this Ju88 or West Tisted that day?

Re: BofB Ju88 Colour shot

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the great information. I for one, would love to see the Ju88 film should the owner have a copy of it for viewing.

If anyone else is interested in colour Luftwaffe film of the Battle of Britain era, a German company called Polarfilm have produced 3 DVD's entitled:-

"Farbefilme Aus Dem Dritten Reich"
"33-45 in Farbe"
"Hitler Deutschland in Farbe"

...which are available from Amazon.de

All contain varying Kodachrome/Agfa home movies, including footage of Willy Messerschmitt inspecting the Me321glider, Heinkel 111's of KG26 being bombed up and taking off, Me110's of ZG26 with crews, Ju88's of KG30 in Norway and a Heinkel 111 testing a tail mounted flamethrower similar to the one Rolf Heitsch had on his Dornier 17 on 15th Sept 1940.
