Re: Query on Shot down Do-17 {1st Question}

18th. Aug.1940 Do 17Z F1+DT of 9/KG76 hit by Bofors fire at low level and attacked by Spitfires of 111 Sqd. As the pilot was making belly-landing the aircraft overflew a position manned by the Addington Home Guard who fired off 180 rounds of rifle fire. The Do17 crash-landed at Leaves Green one baled out POW two jumped too low seriously injured, Ff and B badly burned in crash-landing. Home Guard wrongly believed they were responsible for bringing the bomber down. See Blitz Then and Now vol.1 p.213,

Re: Query on Shot down Do-17 {1st Question}

There are five different German aircraft shown in this montage that gave a totally false, though doubtless comforting, impression of the efficacy of British AA defences at the time. It was a busy day for the Pathe film crews for all the aircraft concerned were brought down on 18 August 1940. In order of appearance:

9./KG76 Dornier Do17Z-2. Port engine disabled by ground defences and set alight during low-level attack on Kenley airfield. Then attacked by P/O R.J.W. Brown and Sgt W.L Dymond of No.111 Squadron and belly-landed in flames and burned out at Leaves Green, near Biggin Hill, 1.30 p.m. FF Oberlt Rudolf Lamberty and Hptmn Joachim Roth (Staffelkapitän) both captured badly burned, BO Hptmn Gustav Peters and BM Oberfw Valentin Geier baled out too low and both captured badly injured in heavy landings, BF Fw Hugo Eberhart deployed his parachute whilst still in the aircraft, baled out very low, but landed unhurt. Aircraft F1+DT 100% write-off.

6./ZG26 Messerschmitt Bf110C-2 (3060). Shot down by Sgt P.E.M. Robinson of No.56 Squadron during escort sortie for KG76 high-level attack on Kenley and crashed inverted and burned out at Pluckley 1.50 p.m. FF Oberfw Adolf Kiefel and BF Uffz Josef Hemmersbach both killed. Aircraft 3U+IP 100% write-off.

3./ZG26 Messerschmitt Bf110C-4. Shot down by fighters during bomber escort sortie over southern England. Believed that attacked by F/O P.S. Weaver of No.56 Squadron that crashed and burned out at Bonnington 1.40 p.m. FF Oberfw Willi Stange and BF Uffz Hans Hesse both missing. Aircraft 100% write-off.
It proved impossible to identify the crew who were buried together as 'Unknowns' in St Stephan's Churchyard at Lympne on August 23.

7./JG26 Messerschmitt Bf109E-1. Shot down by F/L P.M. Brothers and P/O B. Wlasnowolski of No.32 Squadron in combat over Canterbury and ploughed inverted into a wood at Long Hill, Chilham, 5.30 p.m. FF Lt Gerhard Müller-Dühe killed. Aircraft 100% write-off.

6./ZG26 Messerschmitt Bf110C-2 (3102). Severely damaged in combat with fighters during escort sortie for KG76 high-level attack on Kenley and belly-landed at St Mary’s Marsh, Blackmanstone, near Newchurch, 1.35 p.m. FF Fw Herbert Stange captured unhurt, BF Uffz Gerhard Wollin badly wounded - died same day. Aircraft 3U+EP 100% write-off.
Gerhard Wollin is buried at Folkestone New Cemetery at Hawkinge.
