Bf 110 C-4 WNr 3217

I have two sources syaing the Bf 110 C-4 WNr 3217 of 2.(E)/NJG 1 crashed in the sea with the loss of the 3 crew.

One said it was on 21 February 1942 off Stenbjerg, another on 21 January 1942 off Stambjerg.

Please confirm the right date and location.

Thanks in advance

Laurent

Re: Bf 110 C-4 WNr 3217

In the loss information I have for this machine it says the sortie was a 'Verlegungsflug'. Does anyone have an explanation for this type of flight? I've never been able to find an english translation for this.

Re: Bf 110 C-4 WNr 3217

Mon cher Laurent, et al.,

According to the entries (one for each airman) in Veit Scherzer, Die personellen Verluste der deutschen Nachtjagdgeschwader 1940-1945, p. 147, the Bf 110C-4 WNr. 3217 became a 100 per. loss at sea in the area of Stenbjerg [sic], Denmark, on 21.02.42 during a Verlegungsflug. The aircraft was the G 9 + I E of 2.(Erg.)/NJG 1. Uffz. Ulrich Klaus FF and Obgefr. Helmut Willmeroth were missing.

Scherzer does not provide the Werknummer for the above aircraft. Without immediately searching, may I assume that you found it in the LwGQM 6. Abt. materiel loss reports?

Because the loss occurred in Denmark, it is possible that Jörn Junker, an exceedingly knowledge and generous reader of this forum, might be able to provide further addenda or corrigenda.

Hope this helps.

RA

Hi Stig

It is on my site:http://www.flensted.eu.com/g1941017.shtml
But the correct date is 17/3-1941

Best
Soren

Cheers

Re: Bf 110 C-4 WNr 3217

Hello all,

Soren is referring to another crash, with another Bf110 and another crew which crashed near Stenbjerg 17 March 1941.

Then came Michael Balss' first book with Nachtjagd losses. On page 38 it reports a loss near 'Stambjerg' which I haven't been able to find with Google Maps. This can mean that
1) there is no Stambjerg
2) Google Maps disliked/ignored Stambjerg as the worst place on earth or
3) I am not capable to use Google Maps which is properly the best explanation.

At home I will check the Namentliche Verlustmeldung but my Bf110 database tells me that this NVM corrects the date 21 January (mentioned by Balss) in 21 February. This last date can also be found in microfilmreel no. 5 of the Luftwaffe loss lists (as at the IWM). It lists a Bf110 C-4 (Wnr. 3217) lost in the sea near 'the Danish coast', 3 MIA, 100% loss.

About the callsign: Balss page 38 says G9+LE, the NVM I have used for my database, says G9+LU. It is known that the 1./Erg.Gruppe NJG 1 used the G9+?U code (see the losses of Wnr. 2826 and 1809 on 8 July 1942); the 2./Erg.Gr. NJG 1 used G9+?V and 3./Erg.Gr. NJG 1 the G9+?W callsigns before the Erg.Gr. NJG 1 became a NJ Schule.

All the best, Marcel / Venlo

Thank you for the clarification Norbert. I've seen the designation Uberfuhrungsflug, which I've assumed meant the same thing. Is there a difference?

Re: Bf 110 C-4 WNr 3217

The Bf 110 G9+LU was last seen crossing the coast at Stenbjerg/DK. It went down somewhere in the North Sea. Seenotdienst used two days search for it, but found nothing. Vkz confirmed by Seenotdienst.

Re: Bf 110 C-4 WNr 3217

Thanks to all who answered my post.

In Balls Nachjagd losses book, the crew is listed as the following:
Uffz. Klaus Ullrich vermißt
Ogefr. Helmut Willmaroth vermißt
Ogefr. Heinz Stange vermißt (1.Wart)

During a ferry flight, it was not unusual for an aircraft to carry one or more groundcrew, but can someone confirm that these three men were lost with the Bf 110 ? Rabe only listed the two first names while the database entry of Marcel says 3 MIA.

Thanks in advance
