Dornier Do23 identity
I am hoping to identify the staffel that a particular Do 23 belonged to and at which airfield it was based. The Do 23 is coded 33+I11. I know it is from KG253 and may have been based at Gotha but I am having trouble with the 'I' in the code - which staffel and base?

Re: Dornier Do23 identity
Hi Tom,
The first "1" indicates the Gruppe, the second "1" the Staffel. The letter just after the black cross identifies the aircraft within the Staffel, starting with A, then B, C.... I./KG253 was based at Gotha from April 1st 1936 till May 1st 1939. But from February 1937 on they began to convert to Ju86. The code 33+xxx was used from June 1st 1936 till early July 1939. So your picture was probably taken between June 1936 & early 1937. Regards, Rudi. |
