Interesting captured Bf109- III/JG-3
In one of my books on Luftwaffe Markings, which I bought many years ago, there was a photograph of a Bf109F/early G captured by the Russians. The caption was:"...Reputedly one of a pair of Bf109s surrendered to the Russians by two Luftwaffe deserters."
The book was Kenneth Merricks's German Aircraft Markings 1939-1945 and the caption was on page 133. Many years later, I found a more complete picture of this Bf109 and can identify this as a III/JG-3 aircraft due to the insignia on the nose. Can anyone provide more info? Re: Interesting captured Bf109- III/JG-3
Regarding Prien, JFV 9/II, p.181, is it the Bf 109F-4/R1, W.Nr.13233, from 9./ JG 3. Pilot, Gefr. Adalbert Kuhn, is missing. Prien doesn't believe that's an desertation but an misorientation and an lack of fuel. He doesn't believe the desertation because Kuhn and the second pilot Uffz. Erich Volkmann (Bf 109F-4/Z, W.Nr.7640, yellow 12") didn't worked in NKFD later and didn't returned from Russia after the war.

So both pilots never returned from captivity?

Regarding Jochen Prien it's not known that they returned.

Both planes were captured with around 100 kg of fuel in each and full ammo. According to eye-witness they landed one by one, switched off the engine and were surrended without resistance.
