Ergänzungsstaffel

Hello,

Apologies for my ignorance, but what is, exactly, in the Luftwaffe, an "Ergänzungsstaffel" ? a training unit ? a reserve unit ? I need this definition for a search about the "Ergänzungsstaffel-Sturzkampfgeschwader 1"

Thanks in advance

Pierre

Re: Ergänzungsstaffel

An Ergänzungsstaffel or Gruppe, can best be compared with the RAF Operational Training Units. The unit was normally the final posting before going to an operational front unit.

Re: Ergänzungsstaffel

What Seaplanes says is true. Keep in mind that the Ergaenzungsstaffeln were often involved in combat operations as well. My uncle was CO of the Ergaenzungsstaffel JG3, then later headed the Erg. Jagdgruppe 51. They were often drawn into combat with RAF fighters by virtue of the fact that they were stationed on the Channel.
