Ops Frantic sept 1944

This Fort part of the 95th BG remained at Mirgorod (Ukraine )
post or before Ops Frantic Sept ,1944. I would appreciate any
details on why the aircraft was retained by the Russians and
what has become of him in the aftermath of WWII in Russia.

Alex

44-6830 wasn't delivered until Nov 23rd, 1944
It was assigned to the 407th BS, 92 BG as PY-H (just like your photo shows!) in March 1945.
It received battle damage on a Berlin raid March 18th, 1945 and was believed to have force landed in Poland. it was SOC on the 26th that same month,

Looks like it landed behind the Russian lines and was possibly repaired to become one of 21 B-17 used by the 890th Air Regiment.
No list provided by Gordon in his book so I don't know

Cheers
Stig

Re: Ops Frantic sept 1944

No Alex

What you attached now is a Fortress from the 339 BS, 96 BG (AW is the unit designator and the U is the aircraft code letter)

No idea which one it is.

Cheers
Stig
