Me 323 Losses Rumania 27-9-1944

The Dabrowski book on the Me 321/323 states three Gigants were lost to Rumanian Bf 109s/AA on 27-8-44 possibly in the Bucharest area. Are crew and aircraft details for these aircraft known please. Apparantly 66 prisoners were taken from one aircraft and 81 from another while the third was found burnt out. I assume the 109s may have come from Grupu 7 is this the case and are the identities of the pilots concened known, any help appreciated,

Regards

Brian Bines

Correct date is the 27-8-44

Re: Me 323 Losses Rumania 27-9-1944

Hi Norbert,

Thanks for the reply, Matti gave me details on a previous thread of losses on the 26-8-44 which included a Me323 loss by Ploesti ( the Willi Reschke 'Wilde Sau' books claims two 323s shot down by Rumanian forces on the 26th.Aug.) Both the Roba and Dabrowski book infer the losses of 3 Me 323s on the 27-8-44 in the Bucharest area. All I could find from another site is that Capt.Dan Scurtu claimed a Me323 near Buftea on the 26th and next day Lt.Rozarlu claimed another near Bucharest. At one time it was possible to get loss details from WAST in Berlin but I believe this is no longer the case. The 'Axis History Forum' had some details of Me323 losses in Rumania ( dated 31-7-2007) but most of these were ground strafings, it just showed for the period 25-26th.Aug as Me 323s taking part in air evacuation of German troops from Rumania,

Hi Faenor, thanks very much for the info. Matti was good enough to post the details of three Me323's lost on the 26th.Aug that had crew losses. However The Dabrowski books speaks of four losses and another site claims that on the 26th a Gigant was forced down by Romanian fighters 20 miles north on Bucarest. The site says the 12 man crew and 70 members of the Brandendurg Parachute Bn. then all fought their way back to the Waldlager. Is there anything reference to this in any of your sources,

Regards

Hi Brian,

sorry for late answer, but there is little info in the 2nd book:
I/TG 5 (or renamed 15/TG 4) have loss in August 1944 21 maschines:
3.8.1944 1 loss on airfield Tonndorf (Poland) - know from another your topic with Matti answer
27.8.1944 1 Me 323 was destroyed by 332nd FG in airfield Stichovice by Prostejov (but witness say, there was 2 Me 323 destroyed)

26.-27.8.1944 4 to romanian fighters and 3 for FLAK
29.8.1944 4 captured by Romanian in one from Bucarest airfield
30.8.1944 10 destroyed in Hungary airfields - 5 in Kecskemét by US fighters
1.9.1944 3 destroyed in Hungary airfield in Debrecen by US fighters

For me, numbers not fitted to count 21,but if I deleted losses from Tonndorf, Stichovice and from 1.9.1944, this fit to count 21 - number of 21 Me 323 losses was for withdrawal from Romania - that all from the book.

Re: Me 323 Losses Rumania 27-9-1944

There was a German pilot Ltn. Peter Petersen, who worked as a flying instructor in Rumania, who was killed in an I.A.R. 80 crash in 1943.
Is he who you are looking for?
