interchangeable wheel rims

I have had the experience of seeing or hearing about an interesting colour finish/record on some Fw190 wheel rims. In both case, one wheel had a red rim and the other had a black rim.

Now a wheel rim was a standard item which could be fitted on the port or starboard undercarriage leg.

Now would a tyre be directional? We now now that modern car types/treads are dirrectional. Were aircraft tyres? I cannot think of any other reason why you would want to differential by colour, a port or starbaord wheel?

Anyone have any thoughts?

regards

MS
