Re: Lancaster ID
Our friend Geoffrey Sinclair says the following
56 Lancasters lost on bombing operations to Stettin 13 on 20/21 April 1943 14 in 5/6 January 1944 5 on 16 August 1944 24 on 29 August 1944. Between W R Chorley Bomber Command Losses and Theo Boiten Nachtjagd War Diaries the causes are listed as 34 to fighters, 10 to flak, 2 ran out of fuel, 1 crashed, 7 to enemy action, 2 to unknown causes. All 10 listed flak losses were on the 20 April 1943 raid, 12 squadron Lancaster I ED326, lost without trace 12 squadron Lancaster III ED818, crashed Denmark 49 squadron Lancaster III ED620, crashed Denmark 57 squadron Lancaster I W4254, lost without trace 57 squadron Lancaster I ED770, crew buried at Poznan 61 squadron Lancaster I W4795, crashed Renik, 6 crew buried in Berlin. 100 squadron Lancaster III ED557, crashed Baltic 100 squadron Lancaster III ED709, crashed Denmark 460 squadron Lancaster I W4325, crashed Denmark 460 squadron Lancaster I W4956, crashed Baltic The above using the early Boiten books which mostly cover fighter claims, the later books expand to include flak claims. Bomber Command reported 81 bombers missing on Stettin raids, 10 Halifax, 3 Hampden, 55 Lancaster, 4 Stirling, 3 Wellington, 6 Whitley, the raids not mentioned above were 4/5 and 5/6 September, 14/15 and 26/27 October and 28/29 November 1940, 19/20 and 29/30 September 1941. Re: Lancaster ID
To make things complicated further, this may have been Lancaster lost in another raid like Peenemuende. I am afraid those bits does not allow to narrow down the subtype.
