How can it be explained that the last letter of what appears to be the Stammkennzeichen is given on the wing undersurface as W, while on the fuselage as L? (N.B. The fuselage code doesn't look like a Verbandskennzeichen...)

Hi Denes,

Just an speculation: 1. If that Bf 109 F was with an Recce unit, individual letter W whould have been under wing appearing outboard of crosses, +UL could then be the Stkz. (not yet painted over). 2. If unit code ..+UL of 3rd Staffeln still had part of stkz. (..+.W) under wing.
