Do17/215 over Ireland 1941

On 29 May 1941,no. 245 Sqn RAF intercepted a Do17 or possibly a 215 at 08.05hrs. over N. Ireland and pursued it as far as Dublin. The Dornier was last seen off the east coast of Ireland with a smoking starboard engine. Could anyone possibly identify the Dornier, a long shot I appreciate. Perhaps Foreman has a mention in his publication. Many thanks fopr any assistance.

Re: Do17/215 over Ireland 1941

Foreman writes about this interception but the German aircraft is not identified.

"The only air combat occured over Northern Ireland at 0923 hours when two Hurricanes pilots of 245 Sqn, on routine patrol, were vectored towards a hostile aircraft near Lough Neagh. This was sighted by Sgts Hill and Sron, who identified it as a Do17 and chased it southward into Irish airspace. The chase was finally abandonned near Dublin, after the two pilots had expended all their ammunition. The bomber was claimed as a 'probable'."
From "The turning point, part 2", by Foreman

In the same book, the Germans bomber losses this day:
_ a He 111 of IV./KG 27 crashed on take-off from Avord and two of the same unit belly-landed there (damage 30%, 15%, 10%)
_ a He 111 of III./KG 55 crash-landed at Villacoublay (20%)

It would be more logical that the bomber flying over Ireland was based in Britanny or at least western France rather than these two bases.

Many thanks Laurent for that. It was identified by eyewitnesses on the ground as a Dornier 17 or 215 all three aircraft were flying low over Dublin and exchanging gunfire.
In view of the German aircraft type I was wondering was it perhaps from 2.(F)/ObdL at Le Bourget!

Re: Do17/215 over Ireland 1941

Thank you David for that additional information on Leopold Srom, it is most helpful. Hopefully someone can identify the Dornier.
Sgt. Srom was flying in Hurricane W9202 and Sgt. Hill was in V6985, the next question is does anyone have the individual letters of the Squadron codes of these two Hurricanes?
