4(F)./121 loss 12 August 1940

Hi guys

4(F)./121 lost either a Bf110 or a Ju88 on 12 August 1940, due to flak damage (possibly friendly fire). Possibly one man baled out and killed.

Can anyone throw any light on this, please?

Stay safe
Brian

Would this be the Ju 88A-1 that landed in the sea off Barfleur due to Flak damage? Took of at 1255hrs for Portsmouth, ditched 1530hrs and all that is said is 3 crew were rescued, no mention of another but Matti can confirm this

Hi Chris

Yes, that would appear to be the aircraft, though one source mentions a Bf110.

Another source suggests that an NCO baled out; and that three men were rescued from the sea? Hence the inquiry.

Stay safe

BO Ofw Wilhelm Henniges used his parachute before emergency landing and is MIA. I am not sure that this Ju 88 landed at sea, because the reported damages were only 80 %.

Possibly you can derive something useful from the attached (source: TNA HW 13/28) — if you've an appetite for checking map references, that is …

The three men rescued tallies with three life jackets been seen on the surface. Removed in order to clamber aboard the vessel/aircraft easier...?

Luftflotte said it ditched north of Cherbourg and the crew rescued which would also imply a ditching. No mention or suggestion of friendly fire
