Seek victory list of Oblt. Wilhelm Spies of 1./ZG26 in 1940
Hello,
I'm trying to match a scoreboard for what may be the a/c of Oblt. Wilhelm Spies about the end of the FC. It is known that he had two victories in Poland, and scored a further 7 with 1./ZG26 during 1940, for a total of 9 by the end of October, 1940. Besides the two in Poland, one other is known, a Hurricane on 27.5.40. Has anyone located any into on him that would fill in dates for any of his other victory tabs in 1940? He was later a KC winner in mid-1941. Thanx, |

Re: Seek victory list of Oblt. Wilhelm Spies of 1./ZG26 in 1940
Larry: There is also a fairly clear photo of a Bf110 tail fin on page 89 of Van Ishovens " Bf110 at war". Although the score on the tail is not identified specifically as Spies, I am convinced it is, as the tally appears to corrolate to what you describe, his 10th being Yugoslavian. Unfortunately, even under enlargement, it's hard to differentiate between French and British symbols, and no dates are noted under the specific kill markings. The 2 Polish, the Yugoslavian, and Russian markings are easily identifiable. Disregard if your familiar with this photo. Is the photo you speak of different than this? Regards Dean

Re: Seek victory list of Oblt. Wilhelm Spies of 1./ZG26 in 1940
Dean,
No, my photos clearly show a 1./ZG26 aircraft prior to the adoption of the thin white rear fuselage band, and carrying 6 victory tabs on the fin. The photo in van Ishoven, while almost certainly Spies because of the two Polish victories, was much later in his career than my reference photos, which were probably taken sometime about the end of the French Campaign or very early in the Battle of Britain. In fact there are two different photos of this aircraft with this victory tally. The only other possible pilot that this could be is Kogler, and I don't think for various reasons that it is him. I'm greatly in need of the specific dates of Spies' 1940 victories because there are date issues that might argue against identifying him with with these photos with what is presently known and suspected about Spies' career during that period. The incompleteness of 1940 Zerstörer victory claims continues to be a major problem for the research community, but I'm doing everything possible to solve this problem--with significant progress being made. Many people have made important contributions to resolving the remaining mysteries. Regards, Regards, |

Hello,
I need to let everyone know that my e-mail host server is presently having major technical difficulties. If you've tried to email me since about midnight last night--USA Mountain Time, it has bounced. Wait a few hours and try again. The Tech guys promise me that things will be down only a a few more hours. Regards, |
