343 Sr. Squadron USAAF 1943

Hi guys

I'm showing my ignorance once again, but what does "Sr. Squadron" denote? I can't seem to find any reference to this unit.

I have noted a loss of a DB-7 from 343 Sr. Squadron, 325 Sr. Group USAAF on 3 March 1943, an aircraft flown by Lt Henry K. MacDonald. I believe he and his crew were lost. Any details? I hope to find a MACR.

Cheers
Brian

I don't know whether you still need this info but SR stands for Strategic Reconnaissance. I don't whether the 343rd had that designation during the war but they did during the Korean war.

Hi Amrit1

We meet again!

Thanks for your response - but it is not correct! Since my request for help I have received information from Maxwell that advises 'Sr. Squadron' was in fact an abbreviation for 'Servicing Squadron' - and in this case 343 Sr. Squadron was a target-towing unit for B-17 gunners.

But thanks for the interest.

Cheers
Brian

Re: 343 Sr. Squadron USAAF 1943

Hi Brian,

sorry - I did have my doubts about my information (based solely on the aforementioned site, and reference to the 343rd as a Strategic Recon squadron during the cold war in the description of a book on Amazon).

The book is:
