No 1 Squadron. P/O H J Mann 09/06/1940.

Could anyone help me in finding wich Luftwaffe units have been involved in this combat and if they suffered any loss ?

« Daily operational summary for 9-6-1940.

Eleven aircraft ( 6 ‘B’ Flight, 5 ‘A’ Flight ) led by F/Lt. Warcup took off at 0415 hours for MAUDIE ( DREUX ). After refuelling, the eleven aircraft took off to patrol between VERNON and POINT DE L’ ARCHE at 22.000 feet.

Pilot Officer Mann sighted what he thought to be a formation of about 27 enemy aircraft ( in Three bunches of nine ) 10,000 feet below travelling north towards ROUEN up the SEINE.
He tried to draw the attention of Red Leader of ‘A’ Flight by waggling the wings, owing to Faulty R/T. This signal was aknowledged but leader failed to see enemy aircraft due to Blue Leader being in front. Pilot Officer Mann dived towards enemy formation for recognition Purposes at first, and recognising them to be enemy bombers he climbed towards the sun and Then dived to attack a straggler. As attack commenced, the enemy aircraft turned and Mann carried out a slight deflection shot with no immediate apparent result ; after breaking away, the port engine of the enemy aircraft was observed to be emitting black smoke. As Mann Turned to prepare for a second attack, he saw 9 or 10 Me 110’s approaching in a wide circle On his port beam with a view to attacking his tail. Mann immediatly turned towards them And at the same time one Me 110 came into his sights and he gave him a burst with no result. After seeing four or five Me’s on his tail, he broke away and returned, landing at CHARTRES due to shortage of petrol, later joining his squadron at ROBSON ( Beaumont le Roger ). No hits were sustained on our aircraft.

Good morning,

I do thank you very much for your answer, and what an answer ! I could hardly believe being reading P/O Mann’s log book.
According to the few documents existing about this period of No 1 Squadron’s history, it seems that P/O H J Mann ( 42247 ), joined the unit with two other pilots on the eighth of may 1940.
Could you please let me know about the date of his arrival at the Squadron ?
Shall I dare to ask you if you could post other pages of P/O Mann’s log book from his arrrival at No 1 Squadron to the 18th of june 1940 ?

Hi all,
Sorry to say I don't own the logbook, I have a few images from it.
I have searched what I have for info regarding Moses Demozay and unfortuneately he is never mentioned.
According to the book he joined 1 Squadron in France on May 10th not the 8th. I have attached the entry from the log book that shows his movements in France.

Hi Many,
I am very friendly with Joce Millard who also flew for a short while with 1 Squadron at Wittering during the Battle of Britain. I could see if he has any recollection of Moses Demozay.
