Spitfire R6598 (1PRU)
Spitfire R6598 (1PRU) was shot down over Ostend (or on a mission to Ostend) on 22/02/41 (but I've seen reference to 23/02/41 in one source, so may need checks on both dates). The pilot T. M."Tich" Lockyer (37193) was made prisoner.
Does anyone have any information on who may have shot him down or any other details. Cheers A |

Re: Spitfire R6598 (1PRU)
Coastal Command Losses Vol I gives the date as 23Feb41 and states that Lockyer was possibly the victim of Obfw Hermann Staege 2./LG 2
Best Regards Andy Fletcher

Re: Spitfire R6598 (1PRU)
Thank you Andy - that's great.
I should explain that I posted this request on behalf of somebody who is in touch with the Spitfire pilot (Tich). Tich and this person's father were POWs together. I shall pass on the information. Can I just check - 2/LG2 - wasn't that a Lehrgeschwader (a training squadron)?. Thanks to the name and unit you provided, I found this: http://translate.google.com/translat...3DTrn%26sa%3DG Cheers A |

Re: Spitfire R6598 (1PRU)
It wasn't a training unit. There were two Lehrgeschwader and the name meant something more like "demonstration Geschwader" - testing operational techniques in combat.

Slight correction, I spoke with one of the the other gentlemen in the original photograph. I understand that Tich Lockyer died some years ago. |

Re: Spitfire R6598 (1PRU)
Tich was a P.O.W. with my Dad. In my Fathers P.O.W. "Wartime Log" Tich sketched a Spitfire being bounced by 3 109"s, depicting his own shoot down no doubt.
