What happened to Planes of Fame's Me 262?

Planes of Fame Air Museum no longer list the Me 262 as being in their collection and the staff seem unusually vague as to its whereabouts. Is there some secret plan afoot for this survivor or, has it been secretly scrapped?

Re: What happened to Planes of Fame's Me 262?

It was sold to Paul Allen's Flying Heritage Collection. Supposedly being restored to airworthy condition with new build Jumo 004's. Ah Microsoft money!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not to forget also to be reconfigured to "U3" (recce a/c).

Confirm. Sold to the Flying Heritage Collection. The airframe ist under restoration in the U.K., the engines in California. Rumors say Paul wants to see it fly at least once with the original Jumos...

Re: What happened to Planes of Fame's Me 262?

Is it confirmed that the a/c will be restored to its original U3 configuration? Will they switch nose with the NASM example and also utilise the original recce parts that is said to have been in storage?

AFAIK it will retain the fighter nose, but will wear its correct camo.

Re: What happened to Planes of Fame's Me 262?

I can confirm the part on the engines. They are being restored at an engine repair facility in Stockton California. I visited the site to check the progress. Daunting task!!!! to say the least. The Turbine section will be remanufactured with more durable materials to extend the time between overhauls.

Does anybody know the location of the manufacturers data plate on the JUMO 004?

Regards,

Norbert

Re: What happened to Planes of Fame's Me 262?

What is the so-called "correct camo" without the correct camera nose?

I´m afraid the recce version doesn´t deliver enough thrill to the spectator as the fighter version (with 4 MKs!) does...

IMO the camera bulges aren´t less elegant than the fighter nose - especially in combination with the interesting camo of "White 25"

Regards

Roland
