Looking for help for next drawing
Hi Folks.
First off let me introduce myself, My name is Kevin Moffat and my other part time job is Aviation Artist. My next drawing is a commission for a chap who wishes to have a drawing of Fl/Lt RF Boyd of 602 Sqn during the BofB. The main problem I have now is finding the correct markings of the two 109E4's that he had combat with on the 11th of Sept 1940. So far the information I have managed to get is that the engagement took place at 22000 and came down to 500ft above the channel. The 109's were of I/Jg3 and Boyd claimed one destroyed and one damaged...but Battle of Britain :Then and Now states that the aircraft collided while in combat...all pilots survived the dogfight. The book again shows the serial numbers of 5276 being lost in comabt while the damaged 109 was serial number 5341. I was directed to this site from Sim Hq as a good reliable source for the information I need...mainly code letters for the two 109's involved, the gruppe target/mission on the 11th Sep 1940 { allowing me to pinpoint the area the fight took place } and any particular markings on the 109's. I have the info I need for Boyd's aircraft , access to the logbook through his son John, awaiting combat reports from the Archives at Kew..along with the Sqn ORB etc...but to make this as hisorically accurate as I can I really need help with the Luftwaffe side of things. Hope someone can help and many thanks... Best wishes Kevin Moffat PS I'll post the drawing when completed to let you guys see it. ![]() Here is the composition I have for the drawing...showing the likely positions of the aircraft involved.. ![]() |

Re: Looking for help for next drawing
Hi, Kevin...
![]() Just to say I like the line drawing, never mind the finished article... nice, too, to see No602 Squadron, 'City of Glasgow' making an appearance on the forum. Unfortunately, I concentrate on the larger Luftwaffe machines usually, and not fighters, but I trust someone more knowledgable than me in that field will be able to assist you. Look forward to seeing the finished product... ![]() Regards |

Kevin, how do you know those were JG3 Me 109s? There were several claims over the day.

Re: Looking for help for next drawing
Hi Franek
The reports I have came from the Battle of Britian Then and Now. The 11/09/40 shows only two aircraft that had been in combat with one 109 lost and the other damaged { as per the combat report for Boyd }, came from Jg3..I assumed that these were the aircraft I was looking for.... ![]() |

Re: Looking for help for next drawing
Hello As I have noted, the day was quite busy, and there is a lot of risk attributing particular opponents, especially as it was usually few aircraft needed to down a single 109. Hopefully there will be some more leads in combat reports from the combat.

Re: Looking for help for next drawing
Hi again...ok I have the combat reports for Boyd for 11th Sept. Boyd states being "5000 ft above 213 Sqn while they attacked bombers" he attacked some 110's without reslut and states in the " ensuing dogfight, singled out a 109. Attack delivered from above and ahead.E/A dived into the sea approx 10 miles S of Selsy Bill" I can't find any reports of 109's lost in that area...although I don't know which units were involved. One report from the BofB website says that a raid of approx 75 plus attacked Portsmouth and Southhampton and over the Hampshire and Sussex coast....can anyone help out indentifying the 109 claimed by Boyd?? Heres hoping

Re: Looking for help for next drawing
Kevin
The raid on Supermarine works in force of 55 Me 109s&110s intercepted about 16.20? Sorry, neither JG2, I&III/JG27, III/JG53 nor ErprGr 210 suffered losses. It looks a typical case of overclaiming. Concerning your another question, Me 109 pilot could jettison a complete canopy but a windscreen but I do not think you need that info in the light of the evidence. Anyway, please pay attention to the firing distance, now it looks quite close. |
