Do 24 operations on 6.9.1944 in Mediterranean?

Hi all,

few weeks ago I have opened here forum about BV 138...

http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showthread.php?t=11557

There was an idea that this plane could be mistaken for another German flying boat Do 24 also with 3 engines.

Can anybody confirm that at the time there was any Do 24 unit in Mediterranean? And any of the planes on flight on 6.9.44 escorting some vessels?

TIA

Pavel

Seenotkommando Berre (Seenotstaffel 3) reported a strength of 7 Dorniers (almost certainly Do 24) and 2 Bréguet Br. 521 Bizerte flying-boats, plus 9 crews, on the evening of 8 August 1944.
This unit was in Southern France and had been evacuated to Germany by the end of August. After that you may be looking at Do 24s in the Adriatic (although I don't know of any that late in the war) or in the Aegean.

Re: Do 24 operations on 6.9.1944 in Mediterranean?

Hi Nick,

thanks for your reply and idea.
I have searched nice site about Do 24 - http://www.dornier24.com/
and found that there was unit Seenotstaffel 7 resp. Seenotstaffel 70 operating with Do 24 from Athens-Phaleron, 19.8.44 - 12.10.44 (http://www.ww2.dk/air/seefl/seenot70.html).

So it fits into the story when Baltimore met 3 engine flying boat over Greece islands...

Anyone has more info about Seenotstaffel 7 resp. Seenotstaffel 70 and its operations in first days of September?

TIA

Pavel

Hi Tony,

many thanks for your reply. As I am interested only in one day - 6.9.1944 and one particular event it is not worth for me to buy the whole book. I will try to find someone who has the book and would be so kind to look at this date for me.
