Luftwaffe Losses 29-30 May 44

On this night, the Luftwaffe attacked Falmouth and a 151 Sqn crew claimed a He 111 south of the target. I only have one loss that night (a 5/KG 6 Ju 88) and the involved units were KG 2 & KG 6. Is this a case of poor identification again?

Re: Luftwaffe Losses 29-30 May 44

On the night of 14/15-5-44 a crew of 68 Sqd. claimed a He111 shot down south of Weymouth and on the same night the 96 Sqd ORB shows '' According to reports 2 He111's were engaged !?! ''. In the lead-up to D-Day another ORB had the comment that any crew claiming a He111 would be Courts-Martialled , I believe this was because it was thought their victim would probaly have been a C-47/Dakota.

Possibly but why risk a FFS ac and crew against a UK target? Any other possibilities? I have no He 111 claims for this day

A valid point, but perhaps it was a "training" mission gone awry. The only other He 111 loss I have for that day is another training a/c loss--crash due to pilot error.

I have always thought the He111 claims in May 1944 against the UK were as Chris says poor identification. Radio intercepts do not indicate any He111 units operating against the UK, for the 29/30th.May they show KG2, I/KG6, II/KG6, KG51 and I/KG66. The previous night the RAF had lost two Wellingtons and a Mosquito to own fire incidents.
