USAAF incidents UK 1942

Hi guys

Can anyone 'put flesh on bones' regarding the following incidents that involved USAAF pilots/aircraft operating in the UK in 1942. I believe most, if not all, involved collisions with barrage balloons, although annotated as 'hit object in flight':

11/8/42: B-17 41-9098 crashed Craig Berwyn, Wales
1/9/42: P-38F 41-7669 crashed near Burnley
27/9/42: Spitfire BM582 (Lt George T. Keough USAAF) Goxhill
3/10/42: B-17F 41-2445 N. Ireland
29/10/42: B-24D 41-23712 crashed Hurlestone Point, Porlock Bay
13/11/42: P-38G 42-2067 (possibly incorrect) crashed Eglington
3/12/42: Oxford R6179 (Lt Joseph Lowe USAAF) crashed Leggerhead
16/12/42: P-38G 42-12753 (possibly incorrect) crashed Langford Lodge
28/12/42: P-39 42-4544 crashed Much Wenlock

Should anyone be able to help, identities/fates of crewmembers etc will also be appreciated.

Cheers
Brian

Re: USAAF incidents UK 1942

Hi Mike

It would seem that I have misinterpreted "hit object in flight" as being a barrage balloon, since the "object" hit by 41-9098 was a mountain!

I now begin to wonder about the other incidents I have listed. Hopefully the answers will be forthcoming.

Anyway, it's nice to hear from you, Mike, trust all is well.

Cheers
Brian

Re: USAAF incidents UK 1942

From 'Losses of the 8th and 9th Air Forces' I can add the following;

3/10/42 B.17F 41-24451 (401 BS, 91 BG)-On flight from Gander, in poor weather struck Slieveanorro Mountain, near Cushendall, County Antrim. (8 Killed and 2 seriously injured)
29/10/42 B.24D 41-23712 (330 BS, 93 BG)-Crashed Porlock Bay during a 'routine flight'. No cause given. (11 Killed and 1 injured)
13/11/42 P.38G 42-2067 (8th AFSC)-Crashed Gresteel (2 miles SE of Eglinton), County Londonderry. (Pilot killed)
3/12/42 Oxford II R6179 (7th ADG)-Crashed into Fron Hen Mountain, west of Llanferres. (2 Seriously injured)

No details on the other three aircraft I'm affraid.

Regards,

Steve

Re: USAAF incidents UK 1942

Brian -
Glad to help. If you want to pin these down you will
probably have to request the Accident Reports.
Hope you and your " Assistant " are doing well !
Cheers,
Mike
