First Typhoon claim

Hello all!

In Thomas Typhoon and Tempest aces of WW2 is that first victory on Typhoon claimed P/Os I.M. Munro and N.J. Lucas (266 SQN) on 9. august 1942. But in Foremans RAF FC victory claims of WW2 is that F/L N.H. Sweetman (486 SQN) claimed Do 217 shared with 409 SQN Beaufighter over Holbeach on night 23/24. july 1942.

Any details about this?

Thanks!
Michal

Re: First Typhoon claim

Could it have been that although they were converting to Typhoons, Sweetman was still flying a Hurricane? The use of Typhoons at night did not come to the fore until the next year

Re: First Typhoon claim

Well spotted Chris. 486 did not receive their first Typhoon until 30 July 42; first Typhoon op 25 August.

Re: First Typhoon claim

The possibility that 486 SQN still in july 1942 used Hurricanes crossed my mind but I can not verify this.

So thanks Chris and Chris for answer

Re: First Typhoon claim

Oh, be that way, CT - only just checked it to see how blurry it is. Can't think what happened 'twixt & 'tween. My copy's fine.

But nice to share the base with them.
