Carriers in Philly
While coming in for a landing at the Philadelphia airport a couple of weeks ago I saw a couple of old aircraft carriers, presumably mothballed. I made a mental note of the hull numbers, but of course forgot them later (my recollection is 17 and 61 but I could be dead wrong there.) Can anyone tell me which carriers are birthed in Philadelphia?
Thanks, Tom |

Re: Carriers in Philly
An article in the 3/22/08 Philadelphia Inquirer said that the John F. Kennedy was being towed to Philly for storage, so that's probably one of them (don't know its hull no.)

Re: Carriers in Philly
Tom,
USS John F. Kennedy is/was CV-67 and is at Philly. Don't know if they're still in Philadelphia or towed to Newport, RI, but USS Forrestal (CV-59) and USS Saratoga (CV-60) spent time at the "Naval Intermediate Ship Maintenance Facility" as well. Regards, Leendert |

Re: Carriers in Philly
Gentlemen, thanks for your responses. CV-67 was probably one of them. The one with the higher hull number had a modern slant deck, while the other was a WW2 style straight deck.
