Two 5./196 personnel
Does anyone have career details/fates for Lt.z.S Gunther Mehrens and Lt.z.S Karl Schmidt. Both were with 5./196 during May 1940. Any further information on these two would be most welcome

Re: Two 5./196 personnel
Hi, Adam
A Leutnant Karl Schmidt was posted as missing after aerial combat with fighters over the English Channel on May 19th 1940. Might be your guy. http://www.ahs.no/ref_db/lw_loss_pub...?lossid=127263 Regards, Andreas |

Re: Two 5./196 personnel
Almost certainly shot down by P/O I.J. Badger of No. 87 Squadron who claimed a He 114 near Scilly Isles at 21.07 hrs (the correct date is 19 May 1941, not 1940!).
Hope this helps, Ota |

Re: Two 5./196 personnel
Thanks Andreas
I'm trying to track the fates of the naval [air] officers involved in the capture of HMS Seal. I have Oblt.z.S Broili's subsequent fate, just nothing for these two officers. Your webpage says he was a simple Leutnant, but my notes indicate he was with the KM...anything you can add on that? Also, Ota's response further muddies the situation. As always, any further help is much appreciated. Thanks for the responses so far! kind regards Adam |

Re: Two 5./196 personnel
Hi Adam,
I can give the following info: Lt.z.See Günther Mehrens (B) killed 17.05.40 with Ar 196A-2 W.Nr. 0075 6W+RN. Crashed during AS patrol in Kattegat. His pilot, Uffz. Heinz Büttcher was reported missing. Lt.z.See Karl-Ernst Schmidt (B) missing 19.05.41 with Ar 196A-4 W.Nr. 0120 6W+EN. Missing after being shot down by Hurricanes over the Channel. His pilot, Ofw. Günther Nowak was also reported missing. I think this is the same guy that you are looking for. |

Re: Two 5./196 personnel
Hi
The date was a simple typo on my behalf in the message. The correct date is shown in the loss record. As the loss record show him with rank Leutnant and not Leutnant zur See, this is how it has been entered. I guess that Seaplanes further details stem from the KTB of Gen.d.Lw.beim Ob.d.M. Re: Two 5./196 personnel
Many thanks to both of you. If it is of interest, apparently the third officer involved in the capture of Seal was a [then] Lt.z.S Nikolaus Broili of 1./906 who was later killed as 1 Watch Officer [Oblt.z.S] of U-207 when she was sunk in the Denmark Straight on 11.09.1941.
