Plane Identification Unit Identifaction

Hi all,

The ME 109 shown at http://www.messerschmitt-bf109.de/di...otonummer=6337

This has similar unit markings to one I am seeking. Could I have suggestions to squadron, flight etc please.

Thanks in advance

Re: Plane Identification Unit Identifaction

It might be one of those, which were abandoned during the retreat of Rommel`s force in October 1942 in Fuka/El-Daba or somewhere else.

Robert

Re: Plane Identification Unit Identifaction

The interesting thing about the plane I seek is that the white band is adjacent to the cross, like the one in the photo, and it has a horizontal bar in place of the wriggly marker ( do not know the proper name).

Everyone has indicated that this type of placement of the markings did not appear until about mid 1942. The photo I have was marked christmas 1941.

It was certainly must have been taken before March 1942 as my father who took the photo was back in Australia by April 1942. I have confirmed these dates by the official records.

I have possible identification of a number of pilots but the timeline does not match.

I find this very interesting but frustrating as I have been looking to identify the pilot for over 20 years.

Any suggestions?

Regards

Rick

Re: Plane Identification Unit Identifaction

Hi,

this MTO band was used in NA from early 1941 so I could be that your father took picture of one of Bf109F`s belonging to III./JG27, which were lost in late 1941.

Robert

Re: Plane Identification Unit Identifaction

Hi Robert,

Thanks for that information. The plane has the number 9 forward of the cross.

Any idea of who the pilot was. I am unable to say if the pilot was captured, KIA or escaped.

Regards

Re: Plane Identification Unit Identifaction

Hello all,

On another forum I posted a request for any photos of a belly landed ME 109 that was located in or near El Adam (El Adem ?) which was an airfield south from Trobruk. The ME 109 needs to have the number 9 on the sides.

The other request resulted in lots of help and information. I am posting this request on this forum in the hope that further information and photos might come to light.

I require the photo for my personal use and you can PM me if you do not want your photo to be in the public arena.

Thanks

Rick
