Re: Photos + 10-19
Ed
great photo of another Battle of France Hurricane and new information for Peter Cornwell. http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...m=270288561211 Acoridng to the records and Peter Cornwell in Battle of France 'Then and Now' Hurricane P2676 should be in thousands of pieces - belonging to 229 Sqn with P/OD de C C Gower being shot down by JG2 on 18th May 1940 with GOwer bailing out. Looks more as though Gower belly landed though not a lot of damage.Trying to work out if it was coded RE and weathered - though it does look like it was coded 'C'. Great photo. One of a number of Hurricanes on flat beds that never got back to the UK. regards Mark |

This almost invariably leads to the question, did Gower really pilot P2676 at all that day? At least something is wrong here. This certainly is no Hurricane someone has jumped from in the air... Deff a really great shot! ![]() Cheers Stig |

I agree. It seems every pilot seems to have bailed out. We do know he survived. We have no other information if the aircraft was different or the pilot. On the next set of photos from Ed we have another 229Sqn Hurricane upside down (Coded RE-G). Again going through Peter's book Bof F - Tand N there again is no clear indication of this Hurricane loss and I cannot see the serial. http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...m=350112862122 A possibility is that it could be P/O D De C C Gower again? 21st May 1940 in Hurricane P3546 he crashed near Etaples and he was killed. What I can't understand is that Gower is listed as belonging to 253 Sqn and is listed as being killed belonging to 229Sqn. This is a 229 Sqn Hurricane but was it being flown by 229Sqn at the time? It looks as though the Hurricane tried to land and turned over. The possibility is that the pilot broke his neck. If only that serail was visible. Anybody else help? regards Mark |
