Me 109 E-4 B ????
Hello!
I have a loss, where it says that it was a Me 109 E4 B. It was a white 8 and Wnr. 3911 The pilot was an Uffz. S Helmberger and was missing in action on the 12. March 1941 and belonged to II./JG 54 What does "B" stand for? Is the mission known today? Thank you Christian

Re: Me 109 E-4 B ????
"B" stands for Bomb or bomb carrier. 109s were equipped to carry bombs in late 1940, and for the a/c that had not originally been built to carry this equipment, the suffix 'B' was added.
I glanced at John Foreman's "1941 - The turning point, part 1" but didn't notice your a/c for 12 March 1941. |

Re: Me 109 E-4 B ????
Hello Christian,
The Bf 109E with the WNr.3911 was originaly build as an E-1 by Arado Warnemünde around November 1940. Apparently some time later, it was upgraded to E-4/B standard. In Prien's JFV series the loss is recorded as follows Bf 109E-4/B WNr.3911 12.03.41 4./JG54 Uffz. Simon Heimberger (†), Flak - Absturz, über der See N Cherbourg - 100% ws.8+– best regards, Tomislav |

Re: Me 109 E-4 B ????
The "B" modification included the ETC but not the ability to carry droptanks which appeared with the E-7.
