Do24 Losses
The Do24 site describes how the crew of CM+IQ 7 Seenot were picked up by U83 on 15-6-1942, following damage to their aircraft, in the Mediterranean while on an ASR mission. On landing they found the crew of CH+EW were also picked up by another U-Boat, is their any record of this U-Boat. I could not find details of the loss of the two aircraft in Q.M's returns are they confirmed anywhere.
Q.M's returns dated 14-3-43 shows the loss of a Do24 of 6 Seenot with what looks like crew of Uffz Peiche, unfortunately I cannot read any of the details. Would appreciate if anyone has the loss details of this aircraft, Thanks Brian Bines |

Re: Do24 Losses
Hello Brian,
I thing the origin of the story is in the booklet of Horst Thürling the 7.Seenostaffel, the Bord-mechanics the whole event, I could send you a copy, for the other plane it is just noted that they jump-out of a 500 t vessel at the same landing place in Messina maybe the same day the Wn 0031 nd 0051 we couldn't find anymore after, so even if they are not in the Gen. returns posted these losses are realities, at least one is happy, it's Franek, 2 losses that the germans try to hide. ![]() Remi |

Re: Do24 Losses
According Horst Thürling "the 7.Seenostaffel" page 33,34, pilot of CM+IQ was Fw. Sost, BM. was Robert Möller.
Kdt. of U 83 was Kptlt. Krauss |

Re: Do24 Losses
According to my notes from among other sources, the KTB of Gen.d.Lw.b.Ob.d.M./O.Qu for June 1942, the two aircraft lost on 15.06.42 were:
Do 24T-2 W.Ne. 0031 CH+EW. Allocated to 7. Seenotstaffel 24.11.41. lost during an ASR mission 15.6.42 when the aircraft crashed during landing in open sea. The crew was rescued together with 3-4 crewmembers of a Ju 88 from L.G.1 by German submarine U-83. Do 24T-2 W.Nr. 0049 CM+IO. Allocated to 7. Seenotstaffel 20.04.42 and delivered from Aviolanda 27.04.42. Crashed during take-off in open sea 15.6.42 after an ASR mission from Suda Bay rescuing Ltn. Heinrich Hesse of 7./J.G.53. No casualties. Also this crew was apparently rescued by U-83. The aircraft was sunk by gunfire from U-83. In his booklet "Die 7. Seenotstaffel 1941-1944" Horst Thürling make reference to a Do 24 CM+IQ. This Stammkennzeichen was used for W.Nr. 0051 which was allocated to 8. Seenotstaffel on 25.04.42. It was ready for transfer from Aviolanda on 08.05.42 and arrived at the Black Sea ten days later. On 16.09.43, still with 8. Seenotstaffel, the plane was damaged in combat with four Soviet fighters off Noworossisk during an ASR mission. The plane managed to limp back to its base at Ortasli-See. It was finally lost on 17.10.44, the with 70. Seenotstaffel having been evacuated from the Black Sea to Athens earlier that autumn. |

Re: Do24 Losses
Seaplanes, thanks very much for the information it was very helpful. Do you have anything else on the other Do24 mentioned on loss return dated 14-3-43, all I could make out was w.n. possibly 00?9 with crew Ff. Uffz Peiche +, B Uffz. Rubin +, Bm Uffz ????bert, one wounded and Bf and Bs +. I think the unit may have been 6Seenot under Luftflotte 2 but this entry is barely readable,
Thanks again Brian Bines Checked the book 'U-boat Operations' by Kenneth Wynn which shows U83 set sail for the Eastern Medittereanean on 4-6-42 and returned to La Spezia on 20-6-42. |
