No a lot of photo's are free to view or download. (not all but many, i know i spent hours dl them)

there is a search function on footnote but remember it searches after the comment that was written down at the time. Lot of luftwaffe planes can be found under captured material

http://www.footnote.com/browse.php#61213014

to download take a free membership Downloads can take a while because the picture have very high resolution so quite big files, but its worth it every second.

Re: footnote-photos

hi,
thank you for this help! then there is nothing to wonder, why some people can find photos (e.g. from airfields) which are not included in the "normal" footnote. can i search all photos before joining?
all the best

Re: footnote-photos

Hi!
You have to register, but WW2 pix are free.
You only have to pay for some other contents, such as MACRs.
Specific pix are often hard to find because all captions have not yet been entered into the database. In this case the search engine is useless.
Anyway, with much patience and a bit of luck you can get some real gems.
Do register and enjoy!

Chris

you can search at any subject you want and view it if available To download those pictures i mentioned you will have to take a free membership

However not all the footnote document are free. You will see a thumbnail picture of it but wont be able to read it.

Possibly a reason why you cant find a specific (ig) airfield is that in the text of the picture the name is wrong or not mentioned.

Take the picture i posted of the Ju above. Now if you started to search knowing the base name and put thati n the search machine this picture would pop up because it isnt in the text ( read the second picture i posted above)

So if someone recognised the air field and posted it under that name and you would try to search it under that name........ no pictures.

Re: footnote-photos

I go to the Archives on a weekly basis and dig thru these photos all the time.

The reason you can't find specific pics is due to how they are labelled or I should say mislabelled. The description is what the original photographer listed for the shot. If it was wrong, thats how it stays. There are alot of pics that are labelled wrong.

A picture of a FW-190 may be labelled "Captured Nazi Plane or Nazi Wreckage or anything else under the sun". Thats why a search for FW-190 doesn't work all that well.

Nothing beats going there and actually digging in the boxes.

Regards,
Mike

Re: footnote-photos

Regarding the footnote.com pic Snautzer gave example of (abowe), the caption is slightly wrong but story likely mostly true - it was stolen and used for defection. This was the Ju 188 D-2 150541 landing at Sandweiler, Luxemburg, October 1944.
