He59B 11/08/40

Can anybody help with information on a He59B that was destroyed while on the water on the 11th August 1940.

I know the He59B was blown at the water when picking up downed airmen after a engagement that morning by 604 Squadron.

The aircraft was from Seenotzentrale Cherbourg and was 30 miles off Cherbourg. It was protected by six Me109s while picking up downed airmen.

Thanks for looking!

Regards

Danny

Re: He59B 11/08/40

Danny.

There were two losses on that date that I have listed (with queries) as follows:

Seenotzentrale Cherbourg Heinkel He59 (1105). Believed that set alight under attack by F/L E.B.B. Smith of No.610 Squadron during air-sea-rescue mission over the Channel off Calais 11.15 a.m. Pilot unhurt, BM Uffz Ferdinand Deckert (of 2.(H)/41) badly wounded in left thigh – admitted to hospital in Hardinghen. Aircraft 100% write-off.
This aircraft had just dropped a dinghy to what was reported to be an RAF Blenheim crew.
(Query: Deckert listed as BM in Fw58 of 5./JG54 in NVM ?)

Seenotzentrale Cherbourg Heinkel He59 (1854). Crash-landed at sea during search and rescue mission over the Channel north-west of Cherbourg. Believed that attacked by Blenheims of No.604 Squadron (S/L M.F. Anderson and P/O E.D. Crew) 1.35 p.m. Crew believed rescued unhurt. Aircraft 100% write-off.

It would seem that the second is that queried by yourself ? But if anyone can add/correct anything to these entries then I would be grateful.

Re: He59B 11/08/40

The He 59 lost on August 11, 1940, was He 59D W.Nr. 1845 of Seenotflugkdo. 2. 100% Off Cherbourg. Capsized during rescue attempt. No casualties.

To Peter: W.Nr. 1105 was never used on a He 59. Also the He 59B was a prototype and not a production machine. Series production included the He 59C, D and E, the latter being a navigation trainer with enclosed nose section.

Re: He59B 11/08/40

Luft. Qm's returns dated 19th Aug.1940 shows that on 11th Aug. Seenotzentrale Cherbourg lost two He59's bei Einsatz - Kanal. There are no w.n's or crew losses for either aircraft and no note of a later correction entry. Sorry if this has been sorted previously but is this info. correct ?
